The Busia Health Executive Beatrice Nakholi has asked men to take a leading role in breaking taboos around menstruation to safeguard the dignity of women and girls.
Addressing journalists at the Busia County Referral Hospital (BCRH) Thursday, Nakholi said that problems facing women and girls were as a result of men’s to undertake an active role to stop the culture of silence on Menstrual Hygiene related issues.
"It has been a taboo to discuss menstrual hygiene in many homes in the African setups. Most fathers do not take part in the discussions and do not even know when the girls start getting the menses," she said.
“We have found that girls in Busia are at times told to fend for their own products, a situation that has also contributed to teenage pregnancies, " she said.
The official further said there are plans to partner with USAID- Western Kenya Sanitation Project to empower women to ensure they support themselves in getting money through small scale businesses.
The Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD) event which is to be held at the Busia Vocational and Training Centre is set for 30th to mark the day which is commemorated on 28th May annually.
Several dignitaries are expected to attend the event including Cabinet Secretaries, Governors' and partners among them USAID-Western Kenya Sanitation Project.
