Busia County Technical Manager of cluster weighbridges Wellington Odali has commended truck drivers along the route for complying with the weighbridge regulations contrary to previous years when the rules were violated with impunity.

Odali told a press briefing at Korinda weighbridge that the change was prompted by continuous sensitization of stakeholders within the transport sector on the importance of observing the rules.

“The compliance level at this weighbridge stands at 95 percent following continuous sensitization offered to drivers and other stakeholders within the transport sector,” he said.

He noted that the organization impounded 2,400 trucks compared to this year’s 1,400 meaning that a number of drivers were now keen to abide by the regulations.

The official further stated that installation of a high speed weighing motion gadget for Kampala and Kisumu bound trucks in 2021 has ensured smooth movement of trucks.

“This has assisted in filtering the trucks so that we don’t have to weigh every truck,” he said adding that empty trucks were automatically cleared to avoid causing traffic snarl up along the road.

Odali at the same time said that a multi deck has also been installed which does automatic calculation of the vehicle load.

“There are actually more suggestions to improve the operations of the weighbridge,” he said, adding that there were plans to build another facility on the opposite side of the road so that one facility would handle vehicles destined to a particular direction.

Odali disclosed that the virtual weighbridge at Korinda clears between 1,500 to 2,000 trucks per day.
