Conjestina Achieng lands job after leaving rehab
By Peter Ochieng
Celebrated Kenyan boxer Conjestina Achieng has every reason to smile after landing a job.
Conje, as she is known in boxing circles is the new gym instructor and head of security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai, at the Coast.
She landed the job following efforts put in by former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi, alias Sonko.
"Conje will be the gym instructor and head security at Salama Bling Beach resort, Kanamai. Together with her sister, coach and son, we inspected the hotel that she'll be working at and they all agreed. She will now be making a living inorder to support her family," Sonko said in a statement.
Last year, Sonko shifted Conje from her home in Siaya after it become apparent that she was almost loosing it, due to drug addiction.
The flamboyant politician and businessman admitted her in a rehabilitation, coming out days ago as a totally changed person.
Sonko says henceforth, Conje will only go back to her native Siaya under tight security.
"Lakini tumeelewana nawao kwamba Siaya hatarudi tena atakuwa anaenda kusalimia under supervision na kurudi (But we have agreed with them that she will not go back to Siaya. She will be going back to say hi under supervision and she comes back)."
Sonko had the option of employing Conje, but decided against the idea.
"My initial plan for Conje after healing was to employ her as the Head of security operations at the international Club Volume but changed my mind after thinking through what she has gone through before on drug and substance abuse. I don't want her around any environment associated with drugs," he said.
A range of Kenyans especially on social media have thanked the former governor for playing a role in Conje's path to recovery.
They have wished the boxer all the best.
