County Commits to Increase Open Urban Space

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika on Tuesday assured residents of her commitment to increase urban open spaces that contribute to creating habitable, vibrant, and beautiful sites for residents to relax and socialize.

Governor Kihika said open green spaces such as parks reduce heat and mitigate the effects of climate change, and reiterated her intention to ensure a conducive city by planting trees in recreational parks.

The governor guaranteed the residents of continued commitment to improve and maintain the open spaces to acceptable standards, not just in the city but in other municipalities as well such as Naivasha, Gilgil, and Molo.

Some of the notable open spaces in the city are the renowned Menengai Crater and Forest which is a popular site for hiking and sightseeing, Nyayo Gardens, and Lion Garden.

A resident of Nakuru city, Jesse Karanja said the younger generation might not know and appreciate the struggles they have gone through to safeguard the open spaces from land grabbers.

He appealed to the youth to protect all open spaces from anyone who might have the negative intention of erecting skyscrapers on them.

Karanja described the Nyayo Gardens as the ‘lungs’ of the city, and an office for the jobless, that calms their minds and gives them a chance to get out of their congested houses.
