The Meru county government is committed to ensure that every sub-county hospital has a cancer screening machine to ease cancer burden in the region.

Speaking during the burial of a cancer victim Sarah Ntiiya in Muringene location in Igembe Central, Meru governor’s husband Mr Murega Baichu maintained that Igembe region was leading in cancer prevalence in the county, thus the need to come up with strategies to address the challenge.

He maintained that the County government will seek cancer screening machines support from donors including the US to boost the fight against the killer disease.

"We shall partner with other countries including USA so that they can support us in getting cancer screening and treatment machines for effective management of the disease,’’ Baichu said,

He claimed cancer prevalence in the region keeps rising due to careless lifestyles and failure to get early diagnosis adding that cancer was curable if diagnosed at early stages.

Baichu said that it requires concerted effort from all stakeholders to minimize cancer burden which he noted had left many families in abject poverty.

The Igembe Central Sub-County administrator Mutuma Kang'ote noted that there have been many cases of fundraising to aid hospital bills for cancer victims and called upon the government to seek ways on how these drugs can be offered freely just like ARVs.

On his part Igembe Central Member of Parliament Personal Assistant Mr Alex Murithi reiterated that the office of the MP has set aside Sh9million to complete Igembe Central technical training institute adding the institution will be launched soon.
