Young people across the country have been encouraged to participate in the forthcoming Young Drivers contest set for July 15th this year at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.
The contest that will be sponsored by Automobile of Kenya (AA Kenya) in collaboration with the Federation International de Automobile (FIA) will see the winners participate at the International Contest in Vienna, Austria in October 2023.
Automobile Association Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Francis Theuri said the contestants who qualify are from age 18 to 26, must have a valid driver’s license and passed theory test, adding that registration will be free on the company’s website aak@aakenya.co.ke
The CEO who was speaking on Tuesday during the launch of the ‘Best Young Driver Contest’ in Kenya held at AA Kenya Head Office, Nairobi said the competition aims to raise awareness of road safety among young drivers.
"This competition is not a sporting event but an opportunity for drivers to demonstrate their driving skills in a circuit that encompasses various forms of driving conditions such as cornering, muddy roads, tarmac and reversing vehicles in diverse road conditions among others,” he stated.
He said AA Kenya will provide the vehicles that will be used during the contest where drivers will showcase their driving skills and knowledge.
The CEO also announced that the contest will be held in three phases whereby the first phase will involve an online theory exam, while the second and third phases will test on practical skills in areas of first aid, road safety and vehicle handling which are necessary for drivers to prove their competence.
Theuri said the International Young Driver Contest has become popular among the Federation International de Automobile FIA Region members and has proven to be a successful platform for connecting and inspiring safer driving among young people.
"In Kenya, children and youth account for a significant proportion of road traffic fatalities. AA Kenya urges all eligible drivers in the country to take this opportunity to showcase their skills and contribute to the promotion of road safety," urged Theuri.
