Uasin Gishu County Government through the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works has implemented mitigation measures to ensure drainage systems are repaired and improved in all identified areas prone to flooding.

County Executive Committee Member for Roads Engineer Joseph Lagat said the county has made significant progress on the major drains to avert serious destruction of infrastructure and farms due to the ongoing El Nino rains in most parts.

“We have prioritized cleaning and unblocking of drainages to reduce the risk of flooding in residential areas and farms,” CECM Eng. Lagat noted.

The team from the department continued with the unblocking of drainage systems in different parts including Langas ward, Kapseret Sub County along Golden Gate-Kamunu Road, and Maranatha-KK Road among others.

Elsewhere the residents of Ziwa Ward, Soy Sub-County, have a reason to smile following the grading of approximately 20 kilometres and graveling of 5 kilometers of new roads in an ongoing program by Governor Jonathan Bii's administration in the area.

The County through the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works is implementing a road construction program across all wards to transform and boost the local economy.

Eng. Joseph Lagat said more roads are on course across all wards noting that besides opening up new areas for production, road accessibility will help in the overall development of the county.

Some of the newly opened roads in Ziwa Ward include Legebet-Dip, Siring'ana, Koria, and Kiborokwa roads in Ziwa Ward.

In Kiplombe ward the county has improved Transformer-Kiplombe Road, Highlands Educational Centre-Baharini Police Station-Railways Crossing Road, -TransformerYator Road, and Kambi Marakwet Road (graveled).

Roads, Transport and Public Works Chief Officer, Eng. Abraham Kiptalam, said they have completed grading work and expect to start graveling work immediately for the whole project to be complete as soon as possible.

Emily Chumba a resident of Tartar village in Ziwa Ward lauded the county government for improved roads in the area. She noted that the improved roads will facilitate easy transportation of maize to the cereals board during the harvest season.

“For a long time, traveling from one place to the other has been taking us many hours because we didn't have roads. This has enabled farmers in this area to easily ferry their produce to the markets,” said Chumba.
