Date set for FKF presidential election

By Peter Ochieng

A date for the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential elections has finally been set.

The new Electoral Board has announced that the much-awaited national FKF polls will be conducted on December 07, 2024.

Before that, new FKF county officials will be elected on November 09, 2024, exactly a month to the national elections.

The final list of eligible clubs and delegates will be published on October 10, before county and the National Executive Committee (NEC) and presidential nominations are submitted on October 11 and 14 respectively.

The final list of county and national candidates will be known on November 2.

Publication of the 94 national delegates, who will be eligible to vote in the national elections, will then be done on November 23.

The newly formed 5-member FKF electoral board comprises Hesbon Owalla as the chairperson, Merceline Sande as the Secretary, and former AFC Leopards chairman Dan Mule, Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) President James Waindi and Alfred Nganga.

The Electoral Board has also published contents of the electoral code, that will strictly be followed by the candidates eyeing various positions.

Those contesting for the FKF top seat are required to have at least five endorsements from any of the FKF members, must have played an active role in football either as players, member or an official of FKF in at least two of the last five years, and must satisfy the requirements for leadership and integrity as per Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution.

“Candidates for the office of President and Vice-President shall have been in active football (registered as a NEC member, committee member, referee, assistant referee, coach trainer, and any other person responsible for technical, medical, or administrative matters in FKF, League, or Club, or as a player for two of the last five years before being proposed as a candidate)," reads Article 2(a) of the code.

Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed, former footballers Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino as well as McDonald Mariga, Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ocholla, and former FKF boss Sam Nyamweya are among those who have expressed interest in succeeding Nick Mwendwa.
