Kalama Deputy County Commissioner David Gatee has asked residents of Machakos County to exercise caution during the anticipated El Nino rains.

Gatee cautioned residents against crossing swollen rivers during the rains to avoid cases of drowning.

"This time of the year records increased activities like weddings and other festivities which require people to travel from their homes. We however urge residents to be careful not to cross flooded rivers when attending such functions. People do not have to go back home on the same day, “said the DCC.

He also called on residents living in areas prone to flooding like the Masinga sub-county and its environs to stay on high alert and call relevant agencies in case of Elnino-related disasters for emergency response.

Gatee spoke at the Machakos County Governor's office during the unveiling of the county's Elnino preparedness plan.

The administrator also asked parents to monitor their children, especially during the long holiday to avert the loss of lives.

"Parents should closely watch their children not to swim in flooded rivers and water pools because the Elnino rains will occur during the holidays," added the DCC.

He called on farmers to take advantage of the rains and prepare their farms early enough to boost food security.

"I also urge residents to harvest water during the rainy season to mitigate drought," said the administrator.
