The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) through the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit has partnered with the German Embassy in Nairobi, in producing films meant to highlight and increase awareness of the prevalence of child trafficking in Kenya.
In collaboration with The Kenya Film Commission and the embassy, Directorate has taken a bold approach in airing some of the many challenges children living in slums face via a movie titled
Supastaz.
Filmed in Mathare and Kibera settlements, the film had over 150 participants including talented children who reside in various slums within the City. The film’s key cast being part of One Fine Day, a Kibera-based children’s arts platform that exposes the children’s hidden talents and empowers them through creative arts.
The film is based on a nine-year-old girl who seeks to enroll in a dancing competition alongside her friends. What appears to be a joyous endeavour for the children turns catastrophic as a child trafficking cartel targets the competition in order to source its next victims.
The movie that will premier today at the Prestige Cinema along Ngong Road will include the cast of local talents who have prominently featured in countless Kenyan hit series including
Sue na Johnnie and
Makutano Junction.
DCI George Kinoti has been putting more emphasis on such partnerships, observing that whereas poverty is a major factor contributing to the trafficking of children, lack of awareness in the society amplifies the vulnerability of families, leaving them more exposed to exploitation by traffickers.
With an increase in digital threats to children including cyberbullying and sexual extortion, our sleuths are working tirelessly to nab individuals or groups that are engaged in such violations and do hereby advise parents or guardians to reach out to their local DCI offices and file official reports in case of such incidents.
"DCI urges the public to promote such talents by watching the film not only for entertainment purposes, but also for awareness since trafficking is not only an injustice to the victim, but is an injustice to the families and friends of that victim."
