El Nino is the large-scale warming of surface temperatures in the Central and Eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

According to a recent report by the Kenya Meteorological Department, the climate outlook indicates that the whole country is likely to experience enhanced rainfall, including in Nyeri County.

The County's Southern, South Eastern, and Central parts (Nyeri Central, Tetu, Othaya, and Mukurwe-ini) are expected to have above-average rainfall during the season.

In this regard, Nyeri Deputy Governor David Kinaniri together with Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Mugambi co-chaired the County Steering Group Meeting which deliberated on the County’s El-Nino preparedness.

The stakeholders included officers from the Department of Agriculture, Livestock & Aquaculture Development, Water, Environment & Climate Change, Gender, Youth, Sports & Social Services, Roads & Infrastructure, County Public Service Management, Ministry of Interior, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), Kenya Meteorological Department, Red Cross, the Church, Social Protection-National Government among others.

During the meeting, Kinaniri said an action plan will be drawn to guide the multi-sectoral efforts in mitigating the effects of El Nino.

The committee also agreed there's a need to conduct sensitization activities through the use of churches, schools, public barazas, and social media.
