A multi-agency operation has incinerated 438Kgs of Bhang valued at Ksh Sh13,140,000, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital grounds in Kisumu County on Wednesday.
The operation follows a court order given by the Kisumu Law Courts which mandated the destruction of the 10 Sack of the illegal drugs that had been recovered before.
The operation was led by DCI Regional Coordinator for Nyanza, Mr. Lenny Kisaka in collaboration with Kisumu County and Sub County security teams, officers from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), the Judiciary, Public Health among other stakeholders.
Cases of bhang trafficking have been rampant across the country while the DCI has been on the radar to seize contraband drugs from reaching the market especially the youth population.
The law of Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) takes measures for preventing, combating and regulation of the drugs.
This law states that when such drugs have been found, it should be destroyed and overseen by the Magistrate handling the case. The Magistrate should make sure the drugs are burnt completely.
The continued use of bhang has impacted negatively on the education whereby some students have dropped out of school besides being involved in other criminal activities.
The drug menace has also affected the economy as those involved could not do any meaningful engagement that would help them earn a living.
Security administrators have called for concerted efforts by all departments to create awareness among wananchi in order to combat the vice.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ has declared its commitment to fight the illegal activity amd has upped collaborating with other stakeholders in the fight against the sale, distribution and consumption of narcotic drugs.
