The Embu County Government’s Department of Lands is planning to introduce zones where farmers may not be able to subdivide their land further so as to protect agricultural production.
The County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing and physical planning Raymond Kinyua said land fragmentation had become a major threat to food security as farming land was subdivided into portions that were unviable for agricultural entities.
He said the county is formulating policies that will guide such zoning and that the draft policy will be subjected to serious public participation since it touches on issues of human rights.
Kinyua was speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholders' workshop to chart out a way forward for land issues in the county.
The workshop that brought together land registrars, surveyors, agricultural officers, environmentalists and the National Land Commission also looked at how land disputes can be resolved quickly so that the land is released for productive use.
The workshop whose goal is to come up with a draft land policy by December also hopes to lay the groundwork for the establishment of a digital land records storage system.
They also hope to come up with a spatial plan for the county.
