Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has called on the management of Mumias Sugar Company to first offer job opportunities to locals.

He said the Sarai Group which manages the sugar firm should prioritize the employment of the residents and give them a chance to build their expertise adding, “The company should give priority to the unemployed locals who once worked at the factory before it was closed. They come with a lot of experience,” he noted.

The governor said the move will spur economic growth in the area and empower the residents for sustainable development.

He spoke yesterday at Buchifi Village, Etenje Ward in Mumias West Sub County during the burial of Benjamin Mwati, a skilled Mason and retired pastor whom the governor said played a significant role in the construction of Mumias Sugar Company and left an indelible mark on the landscape of the community.

The governor’s comments comes after a few locals complained that the factory was employing foreigners from India and Uganda locking them from the scarce lucrative jobs available in the area.
