Youths in Nyando Sub-county in Kisumu have been asked to enroll in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, in order to acquire technical skills that will enable them get employment in the current economy.
Nyando Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Mr. Elijah Maranga, has called on parents to encourage their children to join vocational training institutions which he noted, were receiving government subsidy, making it affordable for the students.
He also encouraged the youths in the area to liaise with the Kenya Forest Services and set-up tree nurseries, saying they were a good income generating activity, as the tree seedlings had ready market all the time.
Maranga was speaking at the Nyando Sub-County Headquarters grounds in Awasi Friday, during celebrations to mark this year’s Mashujaa Day.
The DCC asked parents to take full responsibility of the lives of their children when they close school next week, by monitoring their movements, to enable the children continue with their education come next year.
On security, the DCC expressed concern at the frequent cases of livestock theft in the Sub-county, saying security officers were carrying out investigations to establish who the culprits were.
He, however, asked residents to be on the lookout and report suspected criminals in the area, so that they can be arrested and face the law.
Maranga who was accompanied by the Sub-County Security team and officers from the County Government of Kisumu said that the Disaster Management Committee, had put in place measures to mitigate against floods during the expected El-Nino rains.
Such measures, he explained, include opening-up of trenches in the flood prone areas in the Kano plain.
