In a recent address at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, emphasized the need for a new approach to the climate change crisis.

She advocated for a shift in perspective, arguing that the conversation around climate change should center on justice and the potential solutions that can be harnessed to address the crisis.

Tuya highlighted that the discourse on climate change has evolved.

"It's no longer solely about confronting an environmental or developmental issue, but rather it's about tackling climate change from a justice-oriented perspective," said CS Tuya.

She pointed out that despite the significant debt burden faced by many African nations, the continent is rich in potential and opportunities that can be utilized to combat the climate crisis.

Tuya stressed the importance of considering the high debt levels of African countries in relation to their capacity to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

She also highlighted the impact of climate change on economies that rely heavily on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, tourism, fisheries, energy, and forestry.

Tuya encouraged the summit attendees to consider how Africa can leverage its vast human and natural resources to transition towards a low carbon economy, while also creating new opportunities for climate finance, trade, and investment.

She called for a proactive approach, urging the delegates to lead the global search for climate change solutions by incorporating diverse perspectives from the youth, indigenous communities, and civil societies from Africa and beyond.

“Let us step up and lead the world to find solutions for climate change by listening to all voices at this climate summit including from youth indigenous communities and civil society from Africa and beyond,” she urged.

The Africa Climate Summit, led by President Ruto, seeks to tackle the growing impact of climate change, especially in Africa. Given the projected rise in climate-related crises, swift action is necessary to address these challenges.

The Summit will provide a forum to inform and shape commitments and outcomes, ultimately resulting in the Nairobi Declaration.

The Africa Climate Summit has started officially today and will run up to date 6, August.
