EPRA increases fuel prices by over Sh10 per litre

By Peter Ochieng

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices.

The prices which take effect on 1st July, 2023 will be operational until 14th July, 2023, when new prices will be announced.

The latest review puts in consideration the recently enacted Finance Act, 2023.

However, implementation of the Act has been temporarily suspended by the High Court, following a case filed by Busia Senator Okoiti Okiyah Omtatah.

That not withstanding, pump prices have increased by between Sh11 and Sh13 per litre, according to the declaration by EPRA.

"Pursuant to the Finance Act, 2023, the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene has been revised from 8% to 16% effective 1st July 2023," EPRA said in a statement.

"Accordingly, EPRA Kenya has recalculated the maximum pump prices that will be in force from 1st to 14th July 2023 taking into account VAT at 16 per cent, EPRA said in a statement."

"As a result, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol, Diesel & Kerosene increase by Kshs.13.49, Kshs.12.39 and Kshs.11.96 per litre respectively," added the Authority.

As such, a litre of Super Petrol will retail at Sh195.53, a litre of Diesel will go for Sh179.67 while a litre of Kerosene will now retail at Sh173.46.
