EPRA reduces fuel prices
By Peter Ochieng
The Energy and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reduced the price of fuel.
The price of super petrol, diesel and kerosene has been reduced by between Sh2 and Sh5.
In a statement issued on Thursday, EPRA said that the price of petrol will go down by Sh5 per litre, diesel Sh2 per litre and kerosene by Sh4 per litre.
“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump price for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decreases by Sh5.00, 2.00 and 4.01 per litre respectively. In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Kshs.212.36, 201.47 & 199.05 effective midnight for the next 30 days,” EPRA stated.
“The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.”
The new prices take effect midnight, and will be operational until mid-January, 2023.
However, Kenyans who took to social media said they were expecting prices to go down by bigger margins.
“Someone is heavily stealing from Kenyans because he knows they can't do anything because every move is viewed from a tribal/political angle,” said Ken Muokatene.
“EPRA, who do you consult before making this adjustment? Thought petrol was going all the way down to Sh150,” said an X (formerly Twitter) useR by name ‘Him of Himself.’
“Why a very minute margin yet global prices have decreased? Stop carrying us pumpkins,” said one Santos.
“Here, there is an error in calculations. Global fuel prices decreased by 16% but yours is dropping by 2%,” added J Mwangi. “Still nothing to smile about,” insisted Chris Ameme.
Last week, Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga demanded that EPRA reduces fuel prices by between Sh48 and Sh50, in line with the reduction in price of petroleum products in the world market.
"Azimio la Umoja Coalition demands that local prices should be reduced by Sh48 or Sh50.”
