Fast-paced modern times have turned energy drinks into the preferred choice for individuals who need quick energy boosts. Medical professionals now caution about cardiovascular problems which could develop from drinking these beverages since they affect blood pressure measurements.
Energy drinks provide caffeine together with stimulants and high sugar content to enhance performance but also pose blood pressure risks.
Various generations from young students to business professionals consume energy drinks when they need to maintain their energy levels through the night or face fatigue at workplace. Widespread energy drink consumption has generated rising medical community doubts about these products.
According to Dr. Anna Svatikova who works as a cardiology fellow at, caffeine functions as a stimulant that produces heart rate increases and blood vessel constriction effects which can raise blood pressure readings.
Research supports this assertion. Science journals including the American Heart Association Journal have reported that people who drink 32 ounces of energy drinks over 60 minutes show major blood pressure elevation together with heart rhythm disturbances.
It is common for energy drinks to also have a sequence of stimulants, such as guarana, taurine and ginseng. Claimed to improve the drink’s ‘energising’ effects, these ingredients can add to the already high burden placed on the heart and circulation. Together, these stimulants may cause a hike into overly high blood pressure with an elevated risk of heart complications.
Those who have pre exisiting hypertension or heart are at much more risk. Intense spikes in blood pressure caused by energy drinks are also deadly even for healthy individuals. Dr. Energy drink consumption does previously shown to affect blood pressure in healthy young adults, Svatikova says.
The potential risks are given by medical professionals who advise moderation. Dr. She advises against energy drink intake, at least for people who are only on the lookout for potential health risks.
