Former Gor Mahia and Sofapaka player Raphael Asudi has reportedly collapsed, fainted, and died on the field during a match in Thika, Kiambu county.
According to news sources, Asudi was participating in a friendly match between the Donholm Seniors and Thika Vitambi teams at the Thika Municipality stadium when he suddenly fell on the field during the ongoing match and was declared dead a few minutes later.
Attempts by his fellow players and the technical team to administer medical assistance to save his life were unsuccessful.
At the time of his death, Asudi was only 27 years old.
"Asudi fell in the middle of the match, causing fear among his fellow players and opponents. The members of the technical bench and his fellow players tried to provide first aid before he was rushed to the hospital. Two hours later, it was confirmed that the player had lost his life," one news source reported.
Asudi, according to a family source, had undergone surgery related to a heart condition. It is said he was advised to quit football.
Reports indicate that the player was supposed to travel to Hungary for studies at the end of the month after receiving a scholarship.
Asudi also played for other Kenya Premier League clubs such as Sofapaka, Nairobi Stima, Posta Rangers, and Bidco United.
