Gachagua 'breaks silence' after fleeing from Limuru funeral
By Peter Ochieng
Former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has 'broken his silence,' hours after he fled from a funeral ceremony in Limuru, Kiambu County.
The former second in command was forced to flee, after goons invaded the otherwise peaceful ceremony, with his car being pelted with stones.
Gachagua through a statement on social media said he knew things were taking a negative turn, when the government withdrew the final aspect of his security this week.
"As Kenyans are well aware earlier this week the government withdrew the final aspects of my security that was in place after the impeachment process we are contesting," he said.
"It now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to the kind of attack we have witnessed today."
He said goons attacked as they were preparing for the burial of Erastus Nduati.
"They descended randomly on mourners present and attacked them using the weapons they had, as well as using the plastic seats available. A specific group followed me as I went to my car, which they proceeded to attack with stones and iron bars. We literally drove out of the venue under a hail of rocks!"
The attack, the former Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) said, was a "very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions."
Gachagua said he will not be scared into submission.
"We will not be scared away from standing with Kenyans who need us to support them in their moments of need. We just expect such a terrible moment of shame will not be repeated."
On Sunday, the former DP declared that he would be making a major political announcement in January 2025, amid alignments and realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
He said he is talking to like minded politicians, before he declares his next political move.
Gachagua was removed from office by impeachment in October, two years after assuming office.
