The government must strive to utilize taxes collected from Kenyans, strictly on the intended programmes and projects so as to gain the trust of the people.
Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago said whereas members of the public have a responsibility to pay taxes, the government too has the moral obligation to account for every coin that is collected.
Speaking Sunday during a church service in Huruma, Eldoret town, Mandago observed that if Kenyans played their role of remitting taxes effectively and the collected levies are utilized prudently, then Kenya would become self-reliant economically in the near future.
The senator, who was accompanied by the county Governor Jonathan Bii during the church service, however cautioned Kenyans against heeding the calls for civil disobedience as advocated by the Azimio coalition, saying this would be dangerous for the country’s stability.
“We have seen what happens to countries that experienced civil disobedience and we would not wish the the same happen for Kenya that God has blessed to remain as an oasis of peace, over the years,” he said.
The senator appealed to the opposition leader Raila Odinga to reconsider his advocacy for mass action and instead remain steadfast in oversighting the Kenya Kwanza government both in and outside parliament.
“The opposition has a role to play in the country's development by providing checks and balances on the government to ensure the country does not head towards the wrong direction,” he noted.
On his part, Bii said the County was fully prepared to host the forthcoming 2023 Devolution conference in Eldoret, slated for 15th -19th August.
He said the venues were ready with access roads and water readily available for the more than 10,000 expected participants.
“We have also formed a consortium of all hoteliers in Eldoret town to ensure adequate accommodation for the visitors and in event of any shortage of rooms, some of them will be lodged in the neighbouring counties of Kakamega, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet,” said Bii.
The two leaders challenged the local business community to be prepared to tap into business opportunities that will be brought about by the biannual summit.
“We expect an economic boom for the region during the conference,” added the governor.
