Governor Lusaka wants MCAs security prioritised

By Peter Ochieng

Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka wants the national government to grant autonomy to County Assemblies across the country.

The move, the governor said, will in turn improve their operational efficiency through automation.

Speaking at the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, during the launch of the fifth County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) games on Tuesday, governor Lusaka emphasised the need for independence among the 47 County Assemblies.

CASA games, he added, provide a valuable platform for fostering unity and integration across counties.

“These games offer a unique chance to bring our County Assemblies together, and it is vital that they operate autonomously to serve the people more effectively,” Lusaka said.

In addition, the governor urged the government to establish a comprehensive retirement plan for County Assembly Speakers, and enhance security of Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs).

He condemned the abduction and murder of Yussuf Hussein Ahmed, the Dela Ward MCA in Wajir County. Ahmed went missing over a month ago in Nairobi, before his body was discovered in river Yahud, this week.

“We have sadly seen honourable members lose their lives in various parts of the country, and it is critical that their safety be prioritised,” he said, underscoring the urgent need for better security measures.

MCAs are elected to represent 1,450 Wards across the Country. Additionally, hundreds of MCAs are nominated after each general election.

The County legislatures, unlike other elected leaders – President, Deputy President, Governors, Senators, Members of Parliament and Women Representatives are not given government security.

On his part, Bungoma County Assembly Speaker Emmanuel Situma urged participants to embrace sportsmanship during the games.

“As we commence these games, let me remind everyone of our core values: fair play, teamwork and discipline. I urge each participant to show sportsmanship, win or lose, let us embrace each other,” said the Speaker.

Curtains of the games will come down on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
