Nakuru County Governor, Susan Kihika, has pledged to prioritize the expansion of Gilgil Sub-county Hospital, despite residents' opposition to the proposed affordable housing project on the hospital's land.
The Hospital, which serves Nakuru and Nyandarua Counties residents, has been deemed 'dangerously full' due to staffing shortages in the past.
Kihika, during a routine tour of the facility, announced the construction of a new structure alongside the 2,000 affordable housing units to increase space.
The Governor also emphasized that, the Affordable Housing Project, will upgrade a hospital to a Level 5 facility and build a Kenya Medical Training College, gaining public support during a public participation meeting.
Governor Kihika promised to equip the Hospital once the construction is completed in addition to fencing-off the hospital land and getting its title deed.
The Hospital, is a high volume four facility, handles over 200 monthly deliveries and manages the second highest number of mental health cases in the country.
She also acknowledged the substantial workload at the facility, confirmed the availability of drugs at the facility ensuring that the pharmacy was well stocked and running.
The residents, who welcomed the move for expansion of the facility, also gave their overwhelming support for the governments Affordable Housing Project, that will see 2, 000 units put up.
The residents emphasized the need to employ the local youths in the project, urging the Governor to petition for tarmacking of roads around the facility, to ease accessibility.
