Bungoma County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director Wilson Koros has said that teachers who have been teaching Grade 8 learners in primary schools will move to the Junior School section when the final earners transit to secondary school.

Koros noted that it is also the reason why there has been low hiring of primary school teachers.

Koros revealed that there have been diverse challenges in the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) but the commission is addressing them.

“All the attention and focus is now at JSS because the commission wants to ensure that it is moving on smoothly,” he said.

Koros, however, noted that those aspiring to teach the JSS with a C plain should acquire a diploma to degree so as to qualify and must also have a minimum C + (plus) in the teaching subjects.

Initially, Koros says that primary school teachers were supposed to be teaching all the subjects but when they move to JSS the subjects will be reduced.

He revealed that there are 724 Junior Secondary schools (JSS) in Bungoma noting that all of them have been allocated teachers.

“The teachers may not be adequate in our schools but the government has tremendously done a lot to ensure that schools are up and running,” he said.

The commission director said that that the commission is in the process of hiring more teachers and lauded the teachers for working hard despite the challenges in the Education sector

“Teachers are doing a superb job despite the shortages being experienced in our schools,” Koros stated.

Koros singled out that Bungoma alone has a shortage of 3,958 teachers in secondary schools.

“In March and May, the commission hired 1,208 teachers to JSS in Bungoma County, which was the highest in the republic,” Koros said.

He added, “Recently the commission has advertised vacant positions for those who have exited the teaching profession,”

Koros said that soon those who applied will be interviewed and those who meet the qualifications will be picked to fill the vacant positions.

Koros urged teachers, area leaders and parents to join hands and ensure that no unrests are experienced in schools.
