Kenyan youth have been urged to embrace technical courses so as to mitigate the soaring levels of unemployment and joblessness in the country.
Mr Daniel Wahungu, the principal Kiharu Technical Training College- Murang’a argues that embracing technical courses will not only mitigate joblessness but will also keep the youth occupied thus reducing crime and substance abuse.
“Joining vocational centers will ensure that crime, alcohol and substance abuse that is crippling our generation is reduced as the form four leavers or those who dropped out of school are fully engaged and are receiving skills that will help earn them a livelihood,” he said
He also opines that technical courses are the solution to the problems the country is facing today as they focus on the practical skills required every day, are affordable and guarantee hands - on training and experience through specialized programs and highly marketable skills.
“From mechanical engineering courses, plumbing skills, hairdressing and beauty, welding, automotive engineering, and even business courses, enrolling in a TVET will empower youth and subsequently save a generation from the ruins of lawlessness, alcohol and drug abuse” he adds
Wahungu observes that every youth ought to take advantage of the government-given opportunity in Technical training and vocational institutes (TVETS) in the country which has well-built infrastructure and the prerequisite facilities for the provision of quality technical skills, business skills and entrepreneurial studies.
“The skills and technical know-how will guarantee the student an opportunity to employ him or herself or even create employment for others because the technical courses are always in demand as they are directly linked to market needs in today’s world”
There are over 2,200 accredited TVET institutions in the country.
