A 19-year-old man was on Monday fined Sh50, 000 or in default serve one year imprisonment by a Murang’a court after he admitted charges of peddling bhang to school going children.
Joseph Murimu who appeared before Chief Magistrate Peter Nthiga was charged that on August 16 at Kayole area within Murang’a town, he was found with 10 rolls of bhang.
Giving the facts about the case, the prosecutor Susan Ng’ang’a said Murimu was nabbed by police officers who were on patrol at around 6pm as he tried to sell the bhang to two students who were on their way from school.
She told the court that the officers had for some days been combing the area after locals raised concerns over suspected selling of bhang to students.
Ms. Ng’anga said the two boys who disappeared were from a nearby library where they had gone to study.
She informed the court that the students disappeared after they saw police leaving behind the accused who was apprehended.
The prosecutor told the court that some bhang peddlers were targeting school going children and called for stringent penalty to the accused.
The accused admitted to the charges and pleaded for leniency saying he was carrying out the illegal business to get money for his upkeep. He was given 14 days to appeal.
