Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital has launched a refurbished Maternal Unit in a move that will improve service delivery for expectant and new mothers.
The Maternal Wing received the facelift at a tune of Sh. 8 Million, in a programme that saw the installation of modern equipment and improvement of maternity theaters, delivery and recovery units.
Speaking after the official opening of the Unit, Governor Gladys Wanga, said the move was to ensure quality service delivery as promised to the people.
“We have officially handed over the Maternal Wing to the Hospital’s officials. The Unit will accommodate deliveries and nursing mothers in a decent place,” she said.
She noted that the number of patients at the facility has improved from 157 to more than 300 in the past eight months, adding that with time, the facility might not be able to accommodate more patients.
To solve this problem, Wanga added, the County will now focus on investing in other peripheral facilities, which will also ensure uniformity in health care services across the County.
She stated that the Maternal Unit was a step towards reducing maternal mortality, which she said is a primary healthcare issue that will soon be dealt with, with the help of Community Health Volunteers.
Dr. Julius Ochieng, the facility’s gynecologist was appreciative of the improvements at the Maternal Department, saying that they are now motivated to work harder to ensure quality service delivery to the patients.
“The number of patients in this Department has increased as a result, and from now onwards you will only hear good things coming from this Hospital, especially the Maternity Department,” he added.
