The ODM party youth leader in Homa County has quit the party and crossed over to the UDA party.
Kevin Ouma who has been the ODM youth leader for over six years has subsequently been elected as the new UDA youth leader.
He was elected in a poll conducted for the UDA youth wing in Homa Bay town and presided over by UDA Co-Ordinator in Homa Bay John Odek.
In the election, human rights activist Evance Oloo was elected the Organizing Secretary. Others were Wayne Odote (Secretary General) and Gordon Owiti (Treasurer) alongside other officials.
Odek said the election was aimed at strengthening UDA in Homa Bay County, adding that all positions were contested by the party’s youth members.
More than 200 delegates from all eight constituencies in Homa Bay County participated in the elections.
“We wanted to have a democratic process and that is why we called UDA youth delegates from all our eight constituencies to conduct the election. Those who have been elected have blessings of the party members,” Odek said.
He said the election was aimed at strengthening UDA in Homa Bay, which is currently dominated by ODM.
Speaking after being elected, Ouma pledged to use his position to promote the UDA agenda in the county.
“I thank our young people for electing me. I urge our people in this county to work together to promote the agenda of UDA in the county,” Ouma said.
He said they will cascade the election to ward level in all the eight constituencies in Homa Bay.
Oloo said they will strengthen UDA in the county to ensure the party gets seats in the county Assembly in the next General elections.
He expressed concern that Homa Bay County Assembly was dominated by ODM party members, a situation which he said impedes oversight.
“Having all MCAs from one political party in our county assembly is a challenge to oversight. We want to ensure UDA too gets MCAs in the County Assembly,” said Oloo.
Kennedy Ongati, a member of the UDA youth league, told youth in the county to embrace peace.
“All we want is peace for the sake of development in our county,” Ongati said.
