Two people charged with the murder of a first-year Maasai Mara University student will remain in custody for 21 days as police conduct investigations into the incident.

The two accused Brian Kimutai Bepco, a fourth-year Maasai Mara University student and John Mwangi Kashu were named as the first and second accused in the case as they were the last people seen in the company of the deceased at an entertainmentspot in Narok town.

Narok Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel Duncan Ondimu from the Directorate of Public Prosecution told the court that the deceased Adah Nyambura was reported as a missing person at the Narok Police Station on 30th April, 2023 in the morning hours and in the evening, her body was discovered at Macedonia area within Narok Township.

The initial report, he said, showed that the deceased had been raped before being murdered. The body was taken to the Narok Referral Hospital Morgue for post-mortem.

He said the postmortem on the body of the deceased was conducted on May 1, 2023 and the necessary samples extracted for purposes of forensic examination.

Ondimu said there is need to interview several witnesses who saw the deceased person before she met her gruesome death, most of whom are university students.

The investigating officer Corporal Richard Simuyu said the two respondents are likely to interfere with investigations if released on bail or bond due to the fact that police are yet to interview witnesses who had last been seen with the deceased.

Corporal Simuyu told the court that the first accused (Brian), had earlier been suspended for disciplinary issues by the Maasai Mara University and he was found with a mobile phone handset belonging to the deceased.

He said the mobile phone belonging to the deceased and those of the two respondents will all be subjected to forensic examination at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

“Based on the leads followed up by the investigating team, makes the accused persons a flight risk and thus they should remain in custody pending detailed investigation,” said the officer in a sworn affidavit.

When asked about their opinion in the motion moved by the prosecutors, the two respondents had no response, forcing the court to grant the investigating office their request of holding the duo in custody as they conclude investigations.

The case will be mentioned on May 23, 2023.
