Over 350 families have been displaced by floods in Kobuya and Kobala locations in Wang-Chieng ward in Karachuonyo constituency Homa Bay County.

The Assistant Chief of Kobala Sub location George Oburu said that the displacement came after River Miriu broke its banks.

He said the affected families come from villages such as Konyi, Kalal, lower Kanyo and Kobuya West. Other villages included Kasirawa, Konyango, Kawuor Agindo and Komenya.

Oburu revealed that at least 150 families who have been displaced in Kobuya location
have been provided with a temporary camp site at Kobuya Primary School.

In Kobala, more than 200 families which have been displaced are camping at Osodo Primary School.

The administrator said the situation may get worse if heavy rains continue in the area.

“The number of the affected families is expected to increase as rains continue to pound this area. We’re asking people to move to higher grounds,” Oburu said, adding that the families have also lost crops and household items.

Kobuya location Chief Damianus Osano appealed for humanitarian aid for the flood victims.

“Residents are appealing to the government and well-wishers to intervene by assisting the families with humanitarian aid,” Osano said.

He said that the victims required foodstuffs, mosquito nets, water treatment chemicals and tents for accommodation.

Osano urged those inhabiting the river’s catchment areas to avoid deforestation to protect the environment.
