The government has destroyed 47 illegal gambling machines valued at Sh.1.8 million confiscated by police officers within Kericho town including Jumbo, Duka Moja, and Majengo.
Speaking at Kericho Police Station where the machines were burnt, the County Commissioner Mr. Gilbert Kitiyo disclosed a total of Sh. 42,321 was recovered inside the gambling machines.
The CC later donated the money from the destroyed machines to a children's home.
Mr. Kitiyo noted that betting had led to an ‘erosion’ of morals especially among the young people in the society leading to broken families as the ‘young’ parents neglect their parental and marital responsibilities due to the vice.
“The government has banned betting and anyone found contradicting the government directives shall be dealt with decisively. By destroying these illegal machines, we have sent a clear message that anything that corrupts the morals of people in our society will not be tolerated,” he added At the same time, the CC revealed that police officers on road patrols impounded a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) ferrying 20 liters of illegal liquor but the occupants of the PSV managed to flee during the crackdown.
