ODM leader Raila Odinga convened an Azimio La Umoja coalition crisis meeting at COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli's Ildamat home in Kajiado County on Sunday, April 10, 2022.
According to media reports, the Azimio presidential candidate convened the meeting to straighten out a number of issues reportedly threatening the coalition's stability.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Atwoli stated that the coalition convened the meeting to iron out issues within the coalition party and present a united front.
The COTU boss noted that the meeting also discussed keeping the coalition united prior to and after the August 9 general elections.

Present during the meeting were; Royal Media Services (RMS) owner Samuel. K. Macharia, Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Jubilee Vice-chair David Murathe, Azimio Executive Director Raphael Tuju, Jubilee Majority Whip Emmanuel Wangwe, among others.
Over the past week, there have been a number of emerging issues that have threatened the unity within Azimio la Umoja. These issues include the question of running mate and party nominations.
Over the weekend, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui stated that the running mate position within the Azimio la Umoja coalition is a reserve of the Mount Kenya region.
“We are not blind followers, the region of Mt.Kenya expects nothing short of the deputy president, it doesn't matter who it is, we began this journey while others did not want anything to deal with Baba, now after they have joined is when they want a seat at the high table. We are not here by chance but by choice,” Kinyanjui stated during a recent tour in Nakuru county.
However, a number of other leaders within the coalition have been touted as the best fit to deputise Odinga. These leaders include; Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka, Peter Kenneth, Agriculture CS Peter Munya and NARC Kenya's Martha Karua.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua in a statement on Sunday, April 10, also expressed interest at the running mate position.
"I believe this country needs the experience of a statesman and the ability of a youthful person. I'm 51 years old very happy, and very youthful and therefore, I present myself for consideration as the running mate to Raila Odinga," he stated.
Party primaries have also threatened cracks within the coalition as leaders seek tickets to contest for various seats across the country.
