Inter Milan book Champions League final slot
By Peter Ochieng
Inter Milan are into the Champions League final for the first time since 2010.
13 years ago, the Italian Serie A side led by Jose Mourinho beat Luis van Gaal's Bayern Munich 2-0 to win the title.
And on Tuesday night at the iconic Sansiro stadium in Milan, Inter beat City rivals AC Milan 1-0 in the second leg of one of the semi final matches to book a final spot.
Argentine Lautaro Martinez was scorer in the 74th minute after an assist from Romelo Lukaku to give Simone Inzaghi's side a 3-0 aggregate win after a 2-0 win in the first leg last week.
AC and Inter use the Sansiro stadium as their home turf, but Inter were the designated home team on Tuesday night.
AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli speaking to Sky Italia said his players gave their all.
"The players gave their all in both legs. Inter deserved to win and we congratulate ourselves with them. We were hoping to reach the final. I am obviously disappointed to not have reached the final. We learned a lot from this season."
Inter will now face the winner of the second semi final, pitying defending champions Real Madrid against Manchester City.
The teams are at an aggregate score of 1-1 ahead of tonight's second leg.
Inter vice president and former captain Javier Zanetti said they better face City in the final.
"It is a great emotion, the group deserved to play in a Champions League final after 13 years. We are waiting to know the name of our opponents, but what this group has done is very important, in any case. I would like to avoid Real Madrid because the competition seems made for them," he said speaking to Sky Italia.
The final will be played in Istanbul, Turkey on June 10, 2023.
