Kahawa West Ward MCA proposes drunk drivers to clean mortuary facilities
By Robert Mutasi
Drivers who will be driving while drunk in Nairobi County will be given responsibility and punishment for cleaning the morgue.
It was after the Member of County Assembly of Kahawa West Ward, Dr Clement Kamaru presented the proposal.
Kamaru has filed an argument in the County Assembly of Nairobi proposing as well in what he says are measures to try to control accidents that have always been witnessed due to drivers carelessness.
It is an argument that has raised eyebrows of residents from Nairobi considering 32 percent of the country's local accidents are caused by drunk drivers.
Kamau said despite the law banning drunk drivers from driving still this continues to cause deaths on the roads.
Kamau said despite the traffic law recommending a fine of 100,000 thousand or a two-year prison sentence for drunk drivers driving cars have been caught and paying the fine, which has failed to impose discipline on the road.
It is from this point that he has moved the motion in the Nairobi County Assembly to clean up the mortuary for one day for whoever is found guilty.
"Let us practice responsibility in what we are doing, if you are drinking, drink responsibly, this issue of drinking and driving is what is causing all this mayhem," Kamaru said.
"It is good that we have traffic offenders of drunk driving volunteer services as correctional measures and also create public awareness like cleaning mortuary facilities," he added.
It is an argument that has been supported by residents of the county after drivers from recreational areas such as bars driving while drunk.
In addition, the residents said the money penalty has failed to discipline drunk drivers on the road. In the argument Kamau recommended the Judicial Department and the Nairobi county government to work together to reach the issue.
