A Centre of Excellence for Climate Action and Research (CECARE) is to be established at the Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) to tackle climate change-related issues.
This is after KAFU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vihiga county government and the University Fund for the actualization of the project.
Speaking after inking the deal, Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo said CECARE would be offering training and undertaking research on matters of climate change with a view to enabling the people to combat the adverse effects of climate change.
Dr. Ottichilo said the Centre would develop and implement action-oriented community outreach programmes on climate change resilience, mitigation and adaptation.
“The Centre will also offer climate information services, undertake action-based research and knowledge exchange, promote climate-smart technology and innovations,” he asserted.
The county head stated that the institution would be the first of its kind in the region and observed that it would mark a milestone in the concerted efforts towards handling climate change issues that are an existential threat to humankind.
He reiterated his commitment to championing the cause for putting in place measures such as tree planting and other environmental conservation activities to counteract climate change effects.
