KeNHA: Expect a two-week disruption of traffic along Uhuru Highway

By Peter Ochieng

Kenyans who frequently use Uhuru Highway in Nairobi have been urged to brace for a two-week traffic disruption.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the temporary traffic disruption at Haile Selassie Roundabout on Uhuru Highway, will run from Saturday 31st August, 2024 to Tuesday 15th October, 2024.

The temporary disruption, KeNHA said, was to facilitate some planned construction works.

“Traffic disruption is due to scheduled road works for construction of a pedestrian underpass at the section,” the agency said in a notice.

“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on the site.”

The plan entails vehicles from Upper Hill towards Waiyaki Way being directed to use a diversion at Green Park, similar to those from Mombasa Road to Waiyaki Way. Motorists from Waiyaki Way to Mombasa Road will use the diversion at Rubis Petrol Station.

Those from the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to Mombasa Road will use the diversion at Rubis Petrol Station or the Ring Road behind Neno Evangelism Church.

KeNHA said traffic flow from the CBD towards Upper Hill, and from Upper Hill to CBD shall not be disrupted.

Meanwhile, passengers who were in a bus heading to Mombasa from Nairobi escaped narrowly after it burst into flames, on Thursday morning.

The incident happened at Tsavo National Park near Mtito Andei, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway. No fatalities were reported, with reports indicating that the fire was caused by brake fluid at the rear wheel.

Interestingly, that is not the first incidence to be reported along the Nairobi – Mombasa Road, this year. In February, 20 people were rescued after a bus they were travelling in caught fire along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, in Makueni County.

Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the passenger service vehicle was enroute to Nairobi from Mombasa, when it went into flames at the Kanga area within Tsavo National Park.

The 1.00 am incident was reported to Mtito Andei police station.
