Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Aden Duale hosted the German Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Sebastian Groth to discuss deepening collaboration on climate action during a Wednesday meeting, October 2, 2024 .

Duale shared in a post from his verified X account details of the fruitful meeting, indicating ongoing collaboration by both countries in addressing challenges arising from climate change.

The main subject of discussion during the meeting was Kenya's ambitious 15 billion tree-growing activity, meant to redeem the country from its lost forest cover area and degraded landscapes.

This is one of Kenya's broader strategies against climate change, biodiversity protection, and the sustainability of natural resources.

Germany has for a while now stood as an ally in matters relating to the conservation of the environment and promised continued support for the project.

They also discussed rehabilitation in the 47-kilometer Nairobi River ecosystem, one of the flagship projects being implemented through the "Climate Worx Mtaani" program.

This initiative looks forward to revamping the polluted river and its surroundings to give a more cleaned-up environment to local people.

The talks also reflected on the status of the 2022 Climate Development Partnership, signed into action during the COP27 climate conference.

This indeed is a partnership that will no doubt reiterate Kenya's commitment to matters of climate resilience and sustainable development.

Through the International Climate Initiative- IKI, Germany has been very instrumental in supporting Kenya's efforts toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, coupled with strengthening climate adaptation mechanisms.

One of the high-profile collaborations between Kenya, Germany, and the UAE is the trilateral collaboration on the rehabilitation of mangroves.

Mangroves are one of the most important ecosystems given their role in serving as a carbon sink, protecting coastlines from erosion, and supporting biodiversity.

The project will work toward the restoration of mangrove forests in Kenya that over many decades have suffered from deforestation and degradation.

It is part of Kenya's wider drive to achieve its targets in response to climate change and to protect the ecosystems within its coastal areas.

On the other hand, Germany remains one of Kenya's key partners in climate action through expertise and resources on various fronts-including support to Kenya's Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and the third National Climate Change Action Plan that stipulates actions toward responding to climate risks.

Both countries have also teamed up in the preparations and support of the Africa Climate Summit, which outshines an opportunity where the unique challenges of the continent are juxtaposed with its opportunities for fighting climate change.

The Kenya-Germany cooperation on climate is even more vital with each passing day, serving as a requisite example of international cooperation needed toward the solution of one of the most pressing issues in the world.
