Kericho Green Stadium has begun in earnest ahead of the National celebrations of the Mashujaa Day on October 20th, 2023,

The stadium is expected to host thousands of guests from all walks of life with President William Ruto presiding over the event.

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Sports Eng. Peter Tum, Saturday during his inspection tour of the arena revealed that the contractor who is already on site has 60 days to complete the modernization of the stadium in readiness for the big day.

Eng. Tum confirmed that the upgrade that will comply with the expected high standards will also include expanding the seating capacity from 2000 to 8000 with ample parking space for the many guests expected on the material day.

“We have started the construction of the VVIP dais itself and after that there is another team that will be coming in to ensure that the other side for members of the public is also completed. So basically under 60 days we’ll have finished this stadium,” said Eng. Tum.

The PS was impressed that persons who had encroached on sections of the stadium had been cordially relocated to alternative areas to pave the way for the ongoing refurbishment of the stadium premises especially at the main entrance which will also be renovated to facilitate a comfortable reception for guests.

“We are working through an inter-agency mechanism where we have everybody in the input as regards what they require for that specific day and I can assure you that this stadium is not going to be the same because even after the Mashujaa day celebrations, it is going to remain here for purposes of competitions in sports,” added Tum.

The Sports PS also mentioned that a sports academy will also be established at the stadium to cater for the youth with sporting talents who will receive training and their skills nurtured and monetized through the Talanta Hela Programme.

“So, all these facilities will be in place at the Green Stadium since we have a contractor who is well known and has done other stadia with excellence and we believe he will be able to do the same here and also complete within the required time, given the short period that we have.” remarkedTum.

National and County government officials, including Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mr. Abdi Hassan, Kericho County Commissioner Mr. Michael Lesimam, and the County Secretary Dr. Wesley Bor accompanied the PS.
