At least 2,535 students in Lamu County are set to benefit from the County Scholarship Programme for the 2023/2024 financial year.

Speaking to KNA today following an interview at the County government Headquarters in Mokowe Lamu Governor Issa Timamy intimated that his administration will spend at least Sh. 105 million to address education development concerns this year.

Governor Issa Timamy stated that the list of beneficiaries will be made available on all social platforms in a bid to assure the public that the selection process was done above board and to the benefit of actual Lamu residents, many of whom come from poor backgrounds.

“Under this program, full scholarship students enrolled in boarding schools have been awarded an impressive sum of Sh. 40,535, while their counterparts in day schools received Sh.15,000,” Timamy stated adding that these scholarships will not only alleviate the financial strain on families but also empower students to dream bigger and aim higher.

“By sharing this information, Lamu County residents can witness firsthand how their resources are being utilized for the betterment of their community,” he stated adding that the move reflects the government's dedication to fostering trust and openness between the administration and the people it serves.

CEC in charge of Education Sebastian Okanga further broke down the number of beneficiaries from each ward with Bahari ward having 713 beneficiaries, Mkomani 513, Hindi 248, Hongwe 241, Witu 364, Shela 26, Mkunumbi 196, Faza 153 and Kiunga 42 beneficiaries respectively.

He further stressed that parents and guardians use formal communication channels to notify the county education department within ten days, starting from October 16, 2023, if a deserving student has been inadvertently omitted from the published list.

The Sh.105 million for the 2023/2024 financial year for scholarships and bursaries is a significant drop from the last financial year when the county government spent Sh. 235 million on education development within the county in a bid to improve education standards which are yet to be at par with the rest of the coastal region.
