Residents of Majoge Basi Ward in Kisii County are seeking the government's intervention over the poor state of the Misesi-Ikoba road, which has been a source of agony for over a decade.
The residents, numbering over 20,000, have launched a petition to draw the government's attention to the road's deplorable state, which they say has denied them their right to free movement.
According to the residents, the poor state of the road has hindered their transportation activities, leaving them unable to ferry green leaf tea and coffee to collection centres.
They have also pointed out that they are unable to move the dead and give them a dignified send-off as a result of the poor road condition.
Patients, too, are bearing the brunt of the poor infrastructure, with the only available Misesi level 4 health facility becoming inaccessible due to the bad state of the road.
Led by Misesi community leadership chairperson Timothy Obiero Atanga, the residents said that the poor state of the road has had a severe impact on the area's general security, as criminals take advantage of the situation to cause chaos.
“Our economic growth has also been affected, goodwill investors and stakeholders are shying away from investing in the area due to poor infrastructure,” said Obiero.
The residents further protested saying that access to education facilities has also been tampered with, denying the children their right to education.
In their petition, the residents are demanding that the government move with speed to ensure that the contractor awarded the contract to improve the road to bitumen standard does so as soon as possible. They have suggested that rehabilitation of the road should be done as the main work awaits. The residents hope that their plea will be heard and acted upon.
Gucha Deputy County Commissioner, Emmanuel Mwachiro, has urged the residents to keep calm as the matter is being addressed.
“The government is committed to addressing your concerns and improving the area's infrastructure,” Mwachiro assured the residents.
He commended them for raising their grievances in an orderly manner, as enshrined in the constitution.
