A young man was on Friday fined Sh.30, 000 by the Kenol law courts for being in possession of 19 rolls of bhang with the intention of trafficking it.
The accused, one Francis Irungu, the court heard, was on March 30, 2023 arrested in Maragua area at 5.35am after the arresting officers received information from members of the public regarding sale of the prohibited substance in the area.
Acting on this information, the officers proceeded to Irungu’s house where by upon searching it, they discovered a black polythene bag concealed in a mat in the accused’s bedroom.
The polythene bag contained 19 rolls of bhang.
The officers immediately arrested Irungu and booked him at Maragua police station.
However, in his defense, before the Senior Resident Magistrate Sheila M Nyaga, the accused claimed that the bhang was not his but was planted on him by one of the police officers.
He further alleged that the police officers forced him to hold the rolls of bhang before taking his photograph when he was arrest.
But upon further investigation, it was found that there was no evidence to support Irungu’s claims and the court found him guilty of being in possession of bhang with the intention to traffic it, a serious offense punishable by the law.
Consequently, the court ordered him to pay a fine of Sh. 30,000 or in default serve a six-month jail term.
