Man sent to jail for torching mother's house

A 25-year-old man facing arson charges has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Molo court. 

The accused, Steven Malel pleaded guilty to setting his mother's house worth Sh89,000 on the 15th February of this year before Senior Resident Magistrate, Daisy Mose. 

The court heard that on the material day, he picked a quarrel with his mother Jane Chepngetich who is also the complaint, accusing her of inciting his wife to walk out of their marriage. 

Malel told the court that he got very angry and found himself setting the house on fire. 

In a probation officer's report tabled before the court, it was established that this was the third time that Malel was setting his mother's house on fire.

In mitigation, Malel said that he was drunk when committing the offence, was remorseful and that he would not repeat it again. He pleaded for the court's leniency and promised to mend his ways. 

The accused is however not new to the courts as he was once sentenced to three months imprisonment for being in possession of unlicensed liquor. 

The offence occurred at Kapkembo village in Kuresoi South.
