Kapsowar ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joshua Kipruto has asked contractors operating in Elgeyo Marakwet to either deliver on their contracts as promised or relinquish their projects voluntarily.
Speaking at the Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly compound, Kipruto voiced his concerns over contractors failing to meet their obligations and even resorting to unethical practices.
One of the key issues raised by the MCA is the alleged practice of contractors taking the Bill of Quantities (BQ), collaborating to manipulate project decisions, and engaging in corrupt practices with officers overseeing the projects.
He highlighted that such unethical actions result in substandard work, jeopardising the quality and longevity of crucial public projects.
Kipruto cited an example of a school construction project where, due to shoddy work, the walls couldn't withstand even the slightest lean, posing a significant risk to students.
“What makes matters worse is that the project had been fully paid for, and the poor quality of work remains unaddressed,” said Kipruto.
In a bid to rectify this unsettling situation, the MCA emphasised the need for transparency and accountability among contractors working on projects funded by the Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly.
The MCA urged contractors to evaluate their capacity honestly before accepting contracts and to refrain from biting off more than they can chew. "This time around, contractors should only take up work they can diligently complete," Kipruto stressed.
Additionally, Kipruto encouraged contractors unable to meet their contractual obligations to communicate their limitations openly and promptly as by doing so, the county assembly can reassign the project to capable hands, ensuring that public projects are completed successfully, on time, and within budget.
