Igwamiti ward MCA Irene Wacuka has called on the government to increase the allocation of school bursaries, especially in informal settlements saying most parents were unable to raise fees for their children.

She said that she attends to parents every morning who were desperate for bursaries to send their children to school.

Her ward also hosts Maina village, the largest and most populated informal settlement in the outskirts of Nyahururu town.

Wachuka also called for the creation of a new constituency called Nyahururu constituency to be hived from the populous Laikipia West constituency saying her Ward alone has 52,000 voters which is a big population in one ward.

“That is why I am supporting calls for one man one vote one shilling because I am straining to give bursaries to needy students due to the large number of applicants. Over 5,000 students apply when I am only able to give to only 900 due to meager resources available to my ward,” said Wachuka.

She added that the creation of more electoral areas in Laikipia County would ensure more resources would come in from the national and county governments.

Wacuka was speaking at the Catholic Church ground on Tuesday during the issuance of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) bursary and funds to students and groups in Igwamiti ward of Laikipia County.

Needy students benefited from bursaries worth Sh3.6 million and various groups shared Sh9.4 million.
