Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza Unanimously impeached

Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been Unanimously impeached by the members of Meru County Assembly on Wednesday evening. 

The embattled Governor was impeached following a second motion that was filed pushing for her removal in office over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, misuse of public funds and contempt of the county assembly and court among other charges.

Her impeachment was supported with votes of all 59 members of County Assembly with ten of them being absent in the session. 

This is the second time the Governor is impeached as she survived the first impeachment on December 2022. 

An 11-member Senate committee which was tasked to look into the grounds of her impeachment submitted a report which found no evidence to the charges raised against her. 

Governor Mwangaza was recently arrested while donating a cow to a needy family but shortly released as the police claimed her arrest as mistaken identity which Mwangaza and her allies considered political witchaunt. 

On Wednesday this week, a court of appeal in Nyeri had rejected an appeal by the Governor to stop the County MCAs from debating her impeachment motion 

The first term Governor who assumed office on an independent ticket has been in Loggerheads with the Members of County Assembly who have criticized her over poor leadership and mismanagement of the county. 

All eyes now turn to the Senate which is expected to form an 11-member Committee to probe her impeachment.
