Migori Youth FC has started their National Super League (NSL) campaign with a barren draw against the 2008 Kenya Premier League (KPL) Champions Mathare United at Migori Green Stadium.

Migori Youth maintained their home unbeaten record but squandered a glorious penalty chance in the 78-minute against the former KPL champions.

However, Mathare United, which was relegated last season from KPL showed a lot of experience that earned them a precious point as they started their campaign life in the NSL.

The Head Coach of Migori Youth FC Sammy Owano said that his boys demonstrated a lot of hope and maturity as they aim to go a step further to secure the top two positions in the NSL league.

Mathare Assistant Head Coach Jeff Maina admitted that Migori Youth was a strong team to beat especially when they are playing in their home turf.

Mr Maina affirmed that NSL teams will not be a pushover as the league progresses especially when they are playing in their home grounds.

The Mathare instructor was happy that they got one point from the away game as the team continues to adjust in the second-division league tier. The slum boys were relegated last season from KPL after finishing second from bottom in the KPL table 2022/2023 with 26 points.

Last season, Migori Youth finished third in the NSL and eventually lost to Wazito FC (changed to Muhoroni Youth) in the two KPL promotion playoffs that were played at Migori and Muhoroni stadiums.

“We are aiming for the promotion in the 2024/2025 KPL and our first game should be able to demonstrate that we are up to the task,” said Mr Owano.

Migori Youth team has also recruited eight new players to replace those who left to join various KPL and NSL teams.

Migori Youth FC next game will be against Trans Mara FC at Sony Song Complex Stadium in Awendo Sub County-Migori.
