A domestic brawl turned tragic in Makuyu area of Muranga County on Thursday after a man lost his cool and stabbed his lover to death in the wee hours of the morning.

Shock and grief engulfed the neighbours in the outskirts of Murang’a town when it emerged that a 44-year old Elijah Muthie Njanja had stabbed 39-year-old Lucy Wanjiru Muiruri killing her on the spot.

Preliminary reports into the tragic incident indicated that the duo picked a quarrel while locked up in their bedroom moments after returning to house in the wee hours of the morning before they went physical.

Murang’a County Police Commander David Mathiu confirming the incident saying the two started quarrels and fights at around 3am, a few hours after they returned to their rented residential house.

He noted that their commotion alerted the daughter of the deceased, Muthoni Kaburu who raised the alarm prompting some neighbours to respond.

The neighbours after responding to the screams broke a window of the bedroom of Wanjiru and saw her body lying in a pool of blood. The man was also lying unconscious on the floor,” said Mathiu.

The commander said the daughter of the deceased said the two had locked themselves from inside when the commotion ensued.

He added that the body had deep stab wounds on the chest and the back of the head saying after investigations, the assailant, who had used a kitchen knife, had faked being unconscious to avoid being attacked by the irate members of the public.

Mathiu continued “from preliminary investigations, the man has been staying with the woman for a while and they had domestic conflicts on various occasions that were at times resolved at the area chief’s office.”

He noted that the two were lovers but were not married, saying the woman arrived at the house around midnight and the man followed her two hours later.

“The man is now at Murang’a level-5 hospital where he was taken and he will be charged with murder. The body was taken to the hospital’s mortuary for postmortem,” added Mathiu.

The two used to work together in the same local hotel before the lady left the work some years ago.

The kitchen knife believed to have been used to kill was recovered at the scene and the commander said it would be used during investigations.

Mathiu urged members of the public to embrace better ways of solving conflicts instead of opting to kill and decried increased cases of murder in families.

“It’s worrying since the report we have is the two were advised to separate but the man continued to stay with the deceased,” stated Mathiu.
