There was shock and grief among police officers in Nyakianga Police Station in Mathioya Sub County when one of the officers committed suicide using his official firearm on Monday.

The officer (name withheld) is said to have taken his life soon after returning to the station from KCSE Examination escort duties.

Mathioya Sub county police Commander, Antony Muriuki, confirming the incident, said when the deceased returned from the exam exercise, he wanted to talk with the officer who was manning the report desk.

“He requested to talk with the officer who was at the report desk but unfortunately he was with a client so he requested Mbugua to wait a bit.

“Mbugua instead proceeded to his house and after a few minutes the sound of gunfire ripped through the police station. When they rushed to Mbugua’s apartment they found he had already shot himself with a G3 rifle, and his body was lying in a pool of blood,” explained the commander.

Muriuki noted the officer who had served at Nyakianga police station for more than three years was staying alone and was addicted to alcohol.

The commander said the body was taken to Kiriani Mission hospital mortuary to await a postmortem. He also called upon officers to seek help whenever they face challenges instead of taking their lives.

“I particularly appeal to young officers to seek help from relevant departments and avoid thinking of taking their lives. Through psychosocial support, one can overcome the burden he is facing,” he added.
