The National Council for Nomadic Education in Kenya (NACONEK) has started an ambitious school feeding program in Mandera County to maintain children in school.
Today, NACONEK distributed 6500 boxes of ready to drink porridge to all schools in Mandera with the view of offering nutrition supplements to pupils.
According to NACONEK, the porridge offers high levels of vitamins and minerals that meet the recommended diet to pupils.
Speaking during the launch NACONEK CEO Harun Yussuf urged partners to support education in the North Eastern region to invest in the school feeding program.
He said NACONEK is geared towards keeping all children in schools in line with improving school performance to make children be important people in the society.
Mandera East Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) William Kipchirchir told residents the main focus of the government is to achieve 100% transition to secondary schools.
Mr. Kipchirchir thanked NACONEK for the school feeding program as this will reduce insecurity in Mandera as all children are enrolled in schools unlike joining terror groups in neighbouring Somalia.
The school feeding programme is set to benefit some 314 primary schools, 314 ECDE centers and 61 secondary schools for a period of 60 days.
